Photography for Good: Exhibition Showcasing Inclusive Commuting Culture

Did you know that trainee bus captains undergo training to learn how to assist commuters in wheelchairs? 

See how a group of young school children learn from MRT station staff about the features and facilities at the station as they prepare themselves to help commuters along their journey.

Share the experience of a classroom of students as they learn about the challenges a person living with dementia faces in his or her commute.

Join the local community as it comes together to learn how they can better show care to commuters with special needs.

Explore heartwarming moments that contribute towards a truly inclusive commuting experience. The “Photography for Good” exhibition, a collaboration between the Public Transport Council (PTC) and the Photographic Society of Singapore (PSS), celebrates the caring spirit that shapes our public transport landscape.

Launched by guest of honour, Mr Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment & Ministry of Transport, this exhibition showcases 71 captivating photographs highlighting the collaborative efforts of public agencies, public transport operators and commuters in fostering an inclusive public transport environment for all. The project was led by award-winning photographer, Mr William Chua, and saw the participation of 11 photographers from PSS.

At the launch event, Mr Baey shared that “commuting is not simply about reaching our destination; it also involves navigating and sharing common spaces as a community. I hope the stories told through this exhibition can inspire and contribute to a more caring commuting culture where commuters offer a hand to those in need”.

Each photograph provides a glimpse of the commitment of public transport operators - Go-Ahead Singapore, SBS Transit, SMRT, and Tower Transit Singapore, as well as their partners in fostering a more caring commuting culture - from the training of trainee bus captains to help those who may need a hand to board or alight from the bus, to working with social service agencies, schools and the community so that we are all equipped to help when needed. They underscore the importance of everyone playing a part in fostering a more caring commuting culture.

“It has been eye-opening to be a part of this project, working with a group of talented photographers to capture the efforts to build a more caring commuting culture. I hope that these photos raise awareness of the engagement efforts on the ground to make the public transport experience more inclusive for everyone,” shared William when asked for his thoughts on the exhibition.

The exhibition is open to the public from 26 June to 7 July 2024, 1-6 pm at Prinsep Gallery, Selegie Arts Centre. Admission is free.
