568 Transport Heroes and 7 Caring Commuters Recognised at the 22nd Kindness Awards - Transport Gold

Outstanding Award Winners from SMRT Trains Ltd at the Transport Gold Awards 2021

SINGAPORE - 1 Dec 2021 ━ The 22nd Kindness Awards - Transport Gold Award recognised a record number of 568 service staff in the Transport Industry and 7 Caring Commuters, for going the extra mile to help others in need. The hybrid ceremony was held at the Ngee Ann Auditorium in the Asian Civilisations Museum and saw 30 Outstanding Award winners and 7 Caring Commuter Award winners presented with the awards. The remaining award winners attended the ceremony virtually. Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Transport and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, Mr S Iswaran graced the event to present the awards.

A joint effort by the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM), Land Transport Authority (LTA), and all the public transport operators and associations, the National Kindness Award – Transport Gold awards staff within the public transport service sector who have displayed exemplary service and gracious behaviour in their course of work. It is a form of encouragement to these outstanding transport workers and to thank them for their contribution towards a more pleasant and gracious society.  The Caring Commuter Award category, which was jointly launched by the Public Transport Council (PTC) and SKM, recognises compassionate commuters who have displayed acts of care and kindness during their everyday commute on public transport.

One of the Outstanding Award winners, Station Manager Chua Joo Chai Andrew, of SMRT Trains Ltd noticed that one of his regular commuters was struggling to manage her special needs son and offered assistance. The boy was experiencing an episode and started laying on the floor. In the next moment, the special needs commuter was motionless. Mr Chua quickly ran over and checked for a pulse. He immediately called for an ambulance and rendered CPR as well as the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the unconscious commuter. The commuter started breathing again before the paramedics arrived thanks to Mr Chua’s quick thinking and actions, which saved the commuter’s life.

Commuters were also recognised for their acts of care on public transport at the awards ceremony. Nurses Ms Ariane Quimno Bermoy, Ms Pillai Anju and Ms Tayag Lourdes Arlos were each awarded the Outstanding Caring Commuter Award for helping to revive an elderly man who was bleeding and lying on the floor of the train station. They had performed CPR on him without hesitation to help revive him and had called for an ambulance. The trio only left when the commuter was in the good hands of the SCDF.

"Everyone plays a crucial role in ensuring our travels on the road are safe and pleasant. The majority think that motorists are the ones who carry the greater responsibility for ensuring the safety of our roads. However, pedestrians, too, share an equal role to play. Besides adhering to road safety and regulations, pedestrians can also do their part by refraining from using their phones when crossing the road. They can also go the extra mile to demonstrate graciousness. All it takes is simply gesturing a ‘thank you’ when a car stops for you to cross. These simple gestures can instantly brighten the motorist’s day. I believe that this will lead the motorist to pass the kindness on to other fellow road users.” Dr William Wan, General Secretary of Singapore Kindness Movement remarked.

The National Kindness Award – Transport Gold 2020 was held on 1 December 2021. The event is in its 22nd year running and recognises individuals in the transport sector who have displayed exemplary service and gracious behaviour. This award inspires the recipients to continue to shine and influence their colleagues in contributing towards a more pleasant and gracious society. About Caring SG Commuters and the Caring Commuter Award

The “Caring SG Commuters” movement began in August 2017, when the Public Transport Council (PTC) launched its first two co-creation trials. The trials provided platforms for commuters to interact with fellow commuters, encouraging a caring commuting atmosphere to make everyone’s travel experience more pleasant, inclusive and welcoming.

The Caring Commuter Award recognises public transport commuters who have demonstrated acts of care during their daily commute. The Caring Commuter Award 2021 is jointly launched by the Caring SG Commuters Committee and Singapore Kindness Movement, and is also part of the Caring SG Commuters movement.
