Title : Care That Lasts Beyond The Destination
Abstract : It was just another morning commute... till Javier noticed someone in need.

The morning commute was like any other - with most commuters glued to their phones, barely noticing the world around them. But, Javier did.

He noticed an elderly woman on a motorised wheelchair, repeatedly dozing off and precariously leaning forward, almost falling off her wheelchair. Assessing the situation, he realised she was a double-legged amputee, and her wheelchair’s seatbelt offered her little support.

Concerned, Javier asked if she was alright. Despite her assurance, she looked disoriented and dozed off mid-sentence. Sensing something amiss, Javier jumped into action. Pressing the emergency communication button, he promptly informed the SMRT staff about the woman’s condition.

Thankfully, in doing so, Kalidass, the SMRT staff at the next station was ready to assist when Javier had issues operating the mobility device while helping the lady alight. SMRT station staff had enough time to board and assist her off the train to rest on the train platform. Relieved that the elderly lady was in good hands, Javier then continued on his journey.

The attentiveness of Javier and station staff ensured the elderly woman received timely help and was brought to safety.  A commuter’s care, awareness, and action can make a meaningful difference that goes beyond the destination.

“It doesn’t take much to offer a helping hand, and I am always inspired by the many moments of kindness I see around us. I hope that Singapore will be known not only as a clean and green country, but also recognised for its caring culture.” – Javier
