Caring Commuter Week is back!

Held in conjunction with the Public Transport Workers’ Appreciation Day at Toa Payoh Hub, the joint event featured plenty of exciting activities, with booths set up by the Caring SG Commuters Committee and the public transport operators. Through fun quizzes and activities, we found out more about the Caring SG Commuters movement and public transport operations in Singapore.

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Caring Commuter Award, recognising commuters for their acts of care to other commuters in need. The Richard Magnus Award for the Outstanding Caring Commuter was awarded to Mr Chan Yarn Kit and Mr Randy Tan. The pair was commuting to work and helped to resuscitate a commuter who had collapsed on the train.

Randy shared that he merely followed his instincts to “help out a fellow [commuter] who was unwell”. Yarn Kit, a medical student, leveraged his medical knowledge and first-aid training to administer CPR. He encouraged fellow commuters to “not be afraid to help” even if they are not first-aid trained.

As part of the Caring Commuter Week, Caring SG Commuters and Go-Ahead Singapore, in partnership with Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS) and Tampines Meridian Junior College (TMJC), launched the CARE Bus initiative on 9 November, to educate commuters on the needs and challenges faced by persons with physical disabilities during their public transport commute.

The Care Bus, bus service 358, passes by both CPAS School and TMJC, and is decked out in artwork by CPAS School students, while TMJC students made the commitment to look out for CPASS commuters during their commute!

“The artwork by students from CPAS School and the commitment by students from TMJC represent the perfect marriage of ‘heart-ware’ and ‘heart work’,” said Ms Janet Ang on the CARE Bus initiative.

Another Caring Commuter Week activity is the Caring Run · Walk · Cycle, where one can run, walk or cycle in a heart-shaped route and post it on social media to show their care for others on public transport. This activity is still open for participation till tomorrow, 12 November 2022, so it is not too late to join us! Don’t forget to tag #CaringCommuterWeek to add to the collection of beautifully mapped-out routes by participants.

The Caring Commuter Week 2022 may be coming to a close, but building a caring commuting culture never stops. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with our latest activities. Let’s work together to foster a more caring and inclusive commuting culture in Singapore.
